Raise your hand if you’ve ever seen a cow being milked. Now, put your hand down so you can continue to scroll.
Dairies are not what I thought they were as a child. A simple bucket and stool upon which to sit were the only tools needed in that picture. Today’s dairies, however, are modernized and extremely efficient. Did you know that some cows are fitted with transponders?! I’m so old fashioned that I just barely have a transponder on my car to get me through toll roads and yet the cows who produce the dairy products we enjoy so much sport these little numbers.
It is fascinating to watch a modern dairy in operation, and you can do just that at Dakin Dairy Farms in Myakka City. On the tour of the dairy you can witness the cows coming into the milking parlor and see the cushy conditions under which these lovely animals live.
In addition to touring the dairy, there are a number of other activities sure to please all ages. The animal barn and hen house provide interactive play time in a petting zoo setting. I enjoyed getting to hold a chicken even though I was a bit apprehensive. However, when a 6-year old gleefully scoops up chicken after chicken with no fear whatsoever, it doesn’t pay to be, well, chicken.
There are hay tunnels, and the popular corn maze is open in October and November. Stop by the farm market to buy local fresh fruits and vegetables as well as some delicious canned goods. There is also the ice cream bar…
