It’s ok… play with your food.

bento-food-1What the…?? Believe it or not, that picture, is food. My sister is actually the one who sent it to me and it peaked my curiosity. I had to do some more research and find out about this new food trend that is becoming very popular in the United States. Well, it’s called Bento Lunches or Lunch in a Box. The idea behind it is to create a compact, well balanced lunch that is visually appealing to children (and adults!) As you can see from some of the pictures, the food looks like art!

I found a great website: Lunch in a Box, that goes into a lot more detail about it. More than I can talk about on here. It’s a borrowed idea from the Japanese culture and it is a great way to get your children to start eating more well balanced meals. bento-food-51

Even for adults, food presentation is a big factor. If something is nicely plated or looks really cool, you’re going to be more tempted to try it out. The same logic goes for children. What if you made that squash or broccoli or zucchini look really fun to eat? Chances are, your child is going to more likely to at least try it.

I will admit, it seems like a lot of effort to put into making a single lunch. I mean, I’m not sure if I could devote that amount of time to preparing a lunch. But if it means your child (or anyone) might start eating more fruits and vegetables, or well-balanced meals, it could be worth it!

Here are a couple other websites that have neat pictures as well!
