Time to Get in Shape!

I have a friend who started jogging for fun and exercise. Pretty soon I found out that she had lost over 20 pounds. Sign me up for that, I thought! So I started slowly jogging in the evenings after work. It was tough at first; I won’t tell you that it was easy.
But soon I was able to build up my endurance and jog a couple of miles each night. After about six months of practice, I started entering 5k races with friends and have never been so proud. There is no feeling of accomplishment like crossing the finish line with onlookers cheering you on.
If jogging is not for you, there are many things you can do to get in shape. Try walking with friends or with just your iPod. Summer is fast approaching and swimming is fabulous exercise for your heart. Or join a gym. Many health plans are now offering reimbursements for gym members. Capital Health Plan’s Health and Fitness reimbursement information can be found at this link.
Along with exercise, eating well is important for maintaining a healthy weight. Fruits and vegetables provide vitamins and minerals that you need to maintain your health. How do you know which fruits and vegetables to eat? A good rule of thumb is the wider the variety, the better. Eat fruits and vegetables of every color: yellow, orange, red, green, purple, blue, white and brown.
If you decide to give running a try, there are lots of races you can enter in your area. The most comprehensive list that I have found for the Big Bend area is thru Gulf Winds Track Club. So my next goal is to be able to run a 10k this summer. Who is with me?!
