FAPC Member Spotlight – Segrest Farms

When you hear the term “fish farm,” what do you think of? We have a huge variety of fish farms in Florida, from food fish to tropical fish. There are farms with above-ground tanks, in-ground ponds and even clam farms in the Intracoastal Waterway, and they are really interesting operations.
Segrest Farms in Gibsonton (near Tampa) is a great example of a tropical fish farm. In addition to fish, they produce aquatic plants and even (yikes) reptiles. Segrest is a supplier to pet stores, so they do not do direct to public sales. However, they have an amazing assortment of fish and other aquatic items available. Check out the catalog. If something is not available at your local pet store that you would like, try working with the store to see if they would be willing to order from Segrest.
I had the opportunity to meet Chris Watts and Andy Jackson from Segrest during the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival this year. With more than 5,600 aquariums on their farms, they certainly know fish and aquatic life!
