July is National Ice Cream Month!

Did you know that July is National Ice Cream Month? In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by a full 90% of the nation’s population. In the proclamation, President Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” (from IDFA)
Ice cream is only the tip of the frozen desert iceberg. Frozen custard, gelato, frozen yogurt, sorbet and sherbets are all great variations. Soft serve is another great type of ice cream. Soft serve is different because it contains less milk fat and during the freezing process air has been added. This make it lighter, creamier and smoother.
I love all the different forms of ice cream and have experimented with many different flavor combinations at home and in professional kitchens. My favorite recipes are often the freshest and simplest to make. Frozen yogurt combines the best of both worlds – health and flavor. Here is a great recipe of mine that can be used to fit anyone’s flavor profile and diet. Enjoy!
Florida Frozen Yogurt (healthy style ice cream)
This frozen yogurt recipe can be used with many different flavors. As long as the basic formula is used, you can use any fruit or dry ingredient to truly make it your own recipe.
1 cup Florida fruit, chopped (any fruit will do)
3 cups Greek-style yogurt (it is important to use Greek yogurt because it has less water content)
½ cup fine natural Florida sugar
1 tablespoon Florida honey
1 teaspoon natural vanilla (optional)
Mix together the yogurt, sugar, honey, fruit and vanilla (if using). Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Refrigerate at least 1 hour before adding to machine. Add mixture to ice-cream maker and follow recommended instructions. When done, store in freezer to firm up.
- Get creative; use different fruit combinations. You can also cook the fruit down with the sugar and then puree it for a finer texture.
- Try adding chocolate chips or crushed up candy bars.
- Dried fruit is a great way to add flavor and texture.
- Zest from citrus can give your frozen treat a zing.
- Crushed up cookies or graham crackers are a fun addition.
- Serve in a hollowed out and frozen orange for extra flare.
