Florida Produce: The Radish

The radish is an awkward little vegetable (to me at least). Maybe I’m not the only one, but I often think what on earth do you do with it, besides maybe toss it on a salad? After putting together all the information for this post, I’m still not convinced that there is much more to do with it besides put it in a salad. Any ideas?
Radishes are thought to be native to China. However, they are grown all over the central and southern parts of Florida. They are available in October, November and peak in December.
How to buy
Squeeze radishes to be sure they are not mushy or pithy. Don’t buy radishes if the tops are yellow or if there is any sign of decay.
Tips for storage
Store radishes in a perforated plastic bag in the crisper area of the refrigerator. Radishes will keep for three to five days.
Always wash radishes thoroughly under cold running water before eating. Trim the top and bottom of the radish with a sharp paring knife. Radishes are wonderful in salads and slaws; they add color, texture and flavor.
Chef Justin suggests that radishes flavor well with salads, slaw, soup, thyme and dill.
I looked around on the internet and came across this article with 10 recipes that feature radishes; looks pretty good to me. Maybe I’ll try one of them sometime soon when radishes come into season. I also looked on Epicurious as well as AllRecipes and found some more options to try. Maybe.
