Speaking of Women’s Health 2010

Last Saturday, a few Fresh from Florida staffers (including myself) drove over to Jacksonville to exhibit and hold a cooking demonstration at the Speaking of Women’s Health event held at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront.
Speaking of Women’s Health is a program of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Specialized Women’s Health and their mission is to educate women to make informed decisions about health, well-being and personal safety for themselves and their families. Attendees were able to receive information and items from various exhibitors, attend special “break out” sessions and get free health screenings.
The Fresh from Florida Kids program hosted a break out session where our own Chef Tom Thomas performed a cooking demo for about 65 participants. He made Horiatiki Chicken Salad for the whole family, complete with finger food for toddlers and baby food from squash. He also answered questions about cooking and nutrition and allowed the class to sample the chicken salad. The class received the Fresh from Florida Kids booklet, a cutting board and pieces of produce used in the salad to go home and make their own.
We saw this event as a great opportunity to educate women about the nutritional advantages of eating fresh fruits and vegetables. To further promote this idea, we handed out several hundred pounds of mixed, fresh produce at the end of the event to attendees.
