2010 Year in Review

2010 was a big year – both for Fresh from Florida and for agriculture in general. Here’s a recap of what was going on all year:
- We sent racing fans to the Fresh from Florida 200 and Rolex 24 in Daytona
- Commercials supporting Florida seafood starring captains from The Deadliest Catch on Discovery began airing
- A farmer near downtown Sarasota gets off the ground with his hydroponic rooftop garden
February
- Four ag leaders were inducted into the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame at the State Fair
- The Florida Watermelon Queen became the National Watermelon Queen
- We helped South Beach Wine & Food Festival goers get “Fun and Fit as a Family” in Miami
- We gave away Superticket passes to the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida race to 3 lucky fans
- Strawberries were at their peak and everyone celebrated! Between the stores being packed with sweet Florida berries and the always fun annual Strawberry Festival, the month belonged to the strawberry.
- Chef Justin traveled around the state giving cooking demonstrations for using fresh Florida produce at multiple Publix Apron’s Cooking Schools
April
- Our Florida Produce Guide on Facebook where consumers can learn when everything is in season and where it’s grown was completed
- The Save the Guac! campaign unveiled a video of our Chef Justin showing how to prepare homemade guacamole
- The Governor Stone returned to Apalachicola
- Some Japanese reality television stars made a splash at the Annual Blue Crab Festival in Panacea
- We began our recurring feature, Recipes of the Month
- The winning classes of an Xtreme Cuisine contest got a special “feast and fun” day with Chef Justin
June
- We got to hang out with the Florida Watermelon Queen for a day and pass out free watermelon to folks in Tallahassee
- Our “Hopeful Gardener” proved she can grow tomatoes
- Pilgrim’s Pride began packaging and selling Fresh from Florida chicken, helping the economy and the environment
- We kicked off our monthly Fresh from Florida newsletter
- Chef Justin’s first “how to Do florida” episode aired
- Publix created a website that shows when produce is “at season’s peak“. Shoppers may also sign up for email and text alerts to let them know when different fresh produce is in stores.
August
- The annual Farm to Fuel summit was held in Orlando
- Chef Dean Max from Fort Lauderdale was crowned King of American Seafood at the Great American Seafood Cook-Off
- Florida’s spiny lobster season began and was off to a great start
- We kicked off our first of 4 Fresh from Florida Chicken events, serving samples at football games
- One of our favorite holidays, National Honey Month, was a sweet treat
- Guest blogger Kimberley took us for a tour of College Park Farmers Market in Orlando
October
- The Fresh from Florida themed maze at Long and Scott Farms opened
- The Florida Grape Growers Association started a new website – www.tryfloridawine.com
- Florida stone crab season began, and we shared how they are a sustainable food
- The winners of our tailgate recipe contest were posted, and they sounded delicious!
- The Department’s Global Grid initiative keeps Florida promotions strong throughout the world
- Our last Fresh from Florida Chicken event for 2010 was the biggest and best yet
December
- We gave away Everglades Seasoning Shacks to our readers for telling us what they would cook with the spice blends
- Commissioner Bronson talked about why real Christmas trees are much better than artificial ones
- We kicked off Florida mullet season with tasty recipes
What an exciting year! We can’t wait to see what 2011 holds for us.
