Florida Strawberry Month

Today is the second day of February, a month I always look forward to for several reasons.

  1. Valentine’s Day – don’t hate. It’s always exciting to get little gifts, even if it’s your mom sending you stuff.
  2. One of my closest friends’ birthday. Gotta love a good birthday celebration with your best friends.
  3. STRAWBERRY  MONTH!

Yes.. strawberry month. And I’ve had strawberries on the brain for a while. Especially after seeing all the recent news  from the Florida Strawberry Growers Association. They have been working hard with a new marketing campaign to get the word out about Florida berries, from the retail side to the consumer end.

The association has launched a Restaurant Recognition & Rewards program to reward chefs and restaurateurs who support the Florida strawberry industry by using the berries in their menus.

For consumers, a new blog called “Strawberry Sue” and a newsletter called the Florida Strawberry Culinary Corner were recently launched that are both consumer and industry friendly. They both include cooking tips, news and, of course, strawberry recipes. Strawberry Sue, Sue Harrell from the Growers Association, is even on Twitter now @flstrawberrysue.

Since February is strawberry month, I have no doubt that I’ll be able to find fresh, sweet berries in any grocery store I go to this week… and probably on sale. :) I’m going to use some this weekend to make something for my friend’s birthday party (can’t share too much, she may be reading).

Happy Strawberry Month to everyone!
