Local Foods Dinner

Recently some friends invited me to their supper club. The group gets together once a month, usually for a potluck supper, and the hosts decide a theme. This month’s theme was Go Locavore, and what a feast it was!

Imagine this – guacamole with tomato, salad with lettuces and strawberries, grilled green beans, pork roast, sweet potatoes with honey, orange and onion salad, spiced pecans, and Key lime pie. The host and hostess even had limequats and mint from their yard on the tables as decorations and to add to our water glasses, and some guests distributed oranges from their tree as party favors.

We have a number of producers who sell directly to customers (check out our Agricultural Product Search), but many of these items were purchased at Whole Foods and Publix, both members of the “Fresh from Florida” program.

I encourage you to create meals using Florida products and see how easy – and delicious – it can be. Let us know how it goes!

Let the world know!

I love getting local produce and prepared foods at all the wonderful local markets in Tampa Bay. I love the Gulfport Tuesday Fresh Market http://jennlikesit.com/2012/02/tuesday-fresh-market-in-gulfport/ and the Saturday Morning Market in downtown St. Pete http://jennlikesit.com/2011/05/saturdaymarket/.

Thanks for writing, Jenn. Those markets look like great places to get fresh, local foods. If I’m in the area on a Tuesday or Saturday, I will make a point to visit.

What a great idea. My son and his friends have been having weekly potluck dinners and I will suggest they try this for something different.
