Florida U-Pick Blueberries

Summer is here, school is out. And if the kids are getting those “there’s nothing to do” blues, you can cure them with a trip to a local u-pick blueberry farm. Although the peak of blueberry season is April and May, some north and north central Florida farms still have berries available for picking. And unlike other processed sweet foods, blueberries are good for your children. They are filled with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are good for their eyesight, memory and also help fight infections.

The u-pick experience is great for kids in other ways too. It provides a welcome respite from too many hours spent in front of the computer or television. Not only can they burn off extra energy and get some fresh air, they get a hand-on experience that teaches them about the hard work required to harvest our food supply.

So get your sunscreen, summer hat and insect repellent ready. Make sure the kids wear closed-toe shoes, have plenty of water, and look up a u-pick close to your area. You can find many at the following links http://www.florida-agriculture.com/consumers/crops/upick/ and http://www.floridablueberrygrowers.com/blueberry-fans/u-pick-farms.html

Or contact your local extension office for their recommendation. Just locate the counties you are interested in at the following link: http://solutionsforyourlife.com/map/

The berries look wonderful. Just wondering if the rain has had an impact on your harvest? We have a mango orchard and the wind and rain have kept us quite busy for last several days. The mangoes are delicious and we are shipping them to all those mango lovers throughout the USA.. Florida does have some great varities to enjoy.
