Did you know that many of the world’s finest sponges come from right here in Florida? Once you have used a natural

sponge versus a synthetic you are hooked. The super soft texture of a natural sponge is perfect for cleaning your skin. They are highly absorbent, create a lot of lather and hold more water without dripping. A natural sponge will last longer than synthetic because it is more resistant to abrasion. Sponges are self-cleaning through their intricate system of canals. They also have enzymes in them to inhibit the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria, yet they are toxin-free and hypo-allergenic.

The sponge is a renewable natural resource that is harvested from the water. Scientific studies have consistently confirmed that the regular harvesting of natural sponges can actually enhance the health and population of the sponges. So taking sponges from the water will not deplete the supply. Good to know!

The best type of sponge for bath use is called a sea wool sponge. The perfect size for that purpose is roughly 5-6” in diameter. Of course the best place to buy them would be at the sponge docks in Tarpon Springs or down in the Keys – wishful thinking to those of us who don’t live or happen to be on vacation near the docks! Another option is to check online boutiques that offer sponges “From Florida!”
