Since 2009, Mary Ann Bucceroni has been teaching children about nutrition through The Healthy Living Lab program in Lee County, Florida. This program, developed by the Lee County School District’s Department of Food and Nutrition Services is available to teach basic nutrition education lessons to kindergarten through 5th grade students. Mary Ann uses her custom designed truck to visit thousands of Lee county students each year in Sanibel, Fort Myers, Cape Coral and other cities.
Since that time, Mary Ann has also brought “Xtreme Cuisine Cooking School” to older elementary students and is now implementing “Xtreme Cuisine Junior” with 2nd and 3rd grade students. By incorporating “Xtreme Cuisine,” students learn the nutritional benefits of Florida fruits and vegetables, many of which are grown in or near Lee county. Students also learn about portion sizes and food groups with the “MyPlate” exercise while sampling a variety of of fresh fruit and vegetables. Older students prepare salsa using fresh Florida ingredients and learn how to read a Food Facts Nutrition label. Thanks to Mary Ann and Lee County Schools, these students are learning lifelong lessons that they will be able to use as well as share with their families.
