Students at five Pasco County elementary schools, including Fox Hollow, Gulfside, Mary Giella, Northwest, and Veterans, are taking part in monthly taste-tests of popular Florida fruit and vegetable commodities as part of the USDA’s Healthier US School Challenge. The program was designed to recognize and encourage excellence in nutrition and physical activity. The University of Florida/IFAS Pasco County Family & Consumer Sciences agent coordinates the program collaborating with the District School Board/School Food Services, UF/IFAS-Pasco Family Nutrition Program, UF/IFAS-Pasco Master Gardeners program, and many community supporters. The team for this project also includes area chefs involved in the Chefs Move to Schools program, an integral part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative.
Following the “Fresh from Florida” Fresh 2U poster of the month schedule, students sampled carambolas, avocados, tomatoes, and cucumbers from September to December. Now that winter break is over, students will sample many other in-season produce items before the end of the school year. For more information email firstname.lastname@example.org
