Here’s a good reason to include Florida avocados on your weekly menu planner. Florida avocados are a good source of many nutrients. In fact, one cup of Florida avocados will provide over half of your daily fiber and vitamin C requirements and one-third of the vitamin E that you need for the day. It also contains 20% of the recommended amount of folic acid, which is particularly beneficial for pregnant women.
Avocados are not only nutritionally dense themselves, they are also “nutrient boosters.” This means they can help the body absorb other heart-healthy nutrients including cartenoids. Many cartenoids can be converted into vitamin A.
Yes, Florida avocados are somewhat higher in calories than other fruits and vegetables. An average-sized Florida avocado has about 300 calories. But because of its large size, those calories can be distributed among several servings. Ounce for ounce, Florida avocados are lower in fat than the Hass variety. Many south Florida avocados are branded as “SlimCados” accordingly.
Florida avocados are easily distinguishable from other avocados in both appearance and flavor. Unlike Hass avocados, the skin of most Florida avocados does not turn dark when ripe. It remains smooth, green and mottled with an occasional brown streak. So enjoy Florida avocados!
