The cool weather of fall provides some welcome relief from the muggy hot summers typical of Florida. It also offers the promise of so many enjoyable activities including football games, harvest festivals, camping trips and much more. In addition, the eagerly anticipated annual harvest of stone crab claws is another treat Floridians can add to their calendar.
Stone crab season runs from October 15 through May 15 in Florida, so we have six long months to enjoy it. But many stone crab festivals occur in the beginning of the season. You can find out more at www.floridarambler.com.
And as farmers and fisherman strive toward sustainability, stone crab harvesting provides a renewable resource from our seas. Crabbers are encouraged to remove just one claw from each crab, which is regenerated over time.
When purchasing fresh stone crab claws, be aware that they should have a mild sea breeze aroma and should be used within two days. Store them in the coldest part of the refrigerator at 32 degrees immediately after purchasing. Then try one of our Fresh from Florida recipes such as Florida Stone Crab Claws with Key Lime Mustard Dipping Sauce. It’s simple and delicious. Bon Appétit!
